4 summer flounder and spotted weakfish caught while deep-sea jigging, trolling, and light tackle fishing in Alabama

The boat rocked gently on the waves. We drifted over a sandy bottom. Our baits bounced along the seafloor. The sun warmed our faces. A gentle breeze carried the scent of salt. Suddenly. A sharp tug. The rod bent double. A flounder burst from its hiding spot. We watched in awe as it fought. Its flat body twisting in the clear water. Finally. We netted our prize. A beautiful summer flounder lay on the deck. Its camouflaged skin perfect for blending with the bottom. We admired it briefly before releasing it back to the depths.

The Cynoscion Nebulosus, commonly known as the spotted seatrout or spotted weakfish, is a prized catch for many anglers along the Gulf Coast. These fish are known for their distinctive spotted pattern and their tendency to put up a good fight when hooked. As we set out on our fishing adventure in Fort Morgan, Alabama, we were eager to test our skills against these wily predators. The calm waters of Mobile Bay provided the perfect backdrop for our pursuit. We started by working the edges of grass flats and oyster bars, areas where spotted seatrout often lurk in search of prey. Our artificial lures danced enticingly through the water, mimicking the small baitfish that these predators love to chase. The first strike came suddenly, the rod bending sharply as a good-sized trout took the bait. The fish's strength was impressive as it made several runs, its silver sides flashing in the sunlight as it broke the surface. After a thrilling battle, we finally brought the beautiful specimen aboard, admiring its distinctive spots and powerful jaws before carefully releasing it back into the bay. Throughout the day, we continued to have success with the spotted seatrout, each catch bringing its own excitement and challenge. The experience of targeting these fish in their natural habitat, feeling the thrill of the strike and the satisfaction of a successful catch, truly epitomized the joy of inshore fishing in this beautiful part of Alabama.
Summer Flounder
Summer Flounder
Species Name: Summer Flounder
Species Family: Paralichthyidae
Species Order: Pleuronectiformes
Habitat: Onshore, Nearshore, Offshore
Weight: 1 - 5 pounds
Length: 15" - 37"
The Paralichthys Dentatus, commonly known as the summer flounder or fluke, is a fascinating species that we were fortunate enough to encounter during our fishing trip in Fort Morgan, Alabama. These flatfish are masters of camouflage, able to change their coloration to match the sandy or muddy bottoms where they typically reside. As we drifted over the inshore waters of Mobile Bay, we used a technique called bottom fishing to target these elusive creatures. Our baits, a combination of live minnows and soft plastic lures, were carefully presented near the seafloor where flounder lay in wait for unsuspecting prey. The bite of a flounder is unique - often a subtle tap followed by a gentle pull as the fish moves off with the bait. It requires patience and a keen sense of touch to detect these bites and set the hook at just the right moment. When we did hook up with a flounder, the fight was unlike any other. The fish would use its flat body to create resistance in the water, sometimes even swimming sideways to increase the challenge. As we brought each flounder to the boat, we marveled at its unusual anatomy - both eyes on one side of its head, and a white belly contrasting with its mottled, sandy-colored top side. The satisfaction of successfully catching these well-camouflaged predators added an extra layer of excitement to our inshore fishing adventure, showcasing the diverse and intriguing marine life found in the waters off Alabama's Gulf Coast.
